John learned to play the accordion when he was 15 years old. His uncle brought him an accordion from Italy when he was in the Army. Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, he was surrounded by a rich Slovenian and Ukranian heritage where his talents were put to good use playing all-night gigs for the polkaing masses. He started the Polka Quads and joined as the band’s youngest member. After many line up changes, he is now the bands oldest member. Download music by the Polka Quads on iTunes!
We had a very full weekend of German themed music, beginning with the Polka Quads from Steelton, PA. With John on accordian, Mark on drums, and Vinny on electric bass, we recorded an authentic polka band for our “Water Polka”. The band leader and founding member, John Salov, has been playing in the Polka Quads for 45 years. Mark, two generations younger, is a School of Music Duquense University graduate. We recorded the band without a metronome and let them play “live”. I sang in their headphones in the control room to guide them through the music.
